Insurance Commissioner To Release Preliminary Insured Loss Figures For 2018 Wildfires

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announces preliminary insured loss data from the Camp, Woolsey and Hill fires. Together, the 2018 fires damaged or destroyed nearly 20,000 structures and tragically claimed 88 lives. The Camp fire eclipsed the Tubbs fire of 2017 as the most destructive and deadly wildfire to hit California.

This is an earthquake of at least 5.5! At the mid-America earthquake center you can see what would happen if the ground beneath you started to shake! You might be surprised that so many things inside the home can be destroyed, even kill you, even though the structure of the home stays intact. "The risk of an earthquake is real" says Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president, Insurance Information Institute. Earthquakes are not covered by homeowners insurance, you need separate insurance to cover earthquakes. The Institute for Business and Home Safety says there are easy and inexpensive steps you can take inside your home to make it safer. Anchor bookcases and filing cabinets to the wall. Install ledge barriers on shelves. Put heavy things lower. Harvy Ryland, President of the Institute for Business and Home Safety ( says earthquakes injure and kill people, destroy their homes and steal their jobs. The tragedy is that we know how to reduce injuries to families and their homes, and we are not doing it.

Most car renters are covered by their own personal auto insurance, but exactly what is covered varies from company to company. Jan Armstrong of the American Car Rental Association says the simplest thing is to check your own personal insurance first, and if you don't feel comfortable interpreting your own insurance policy yourself, just call your agent who will be able to tell you if you have coverage while you are driving a rental car. Ken Elder of Thrifty Rental Car says that his company takes the riskiest drivers along with the best drivers, but they have no way of knowing which is which. The Insurance Information Institute says do your homework so that you will know what kind of insurance you already have and whether or not you need to purchase more at the rental car counter.
